Randall Cunningham for Hall of Fame

Sept. 11, 1989

Dec. 7, 1998

Among those in the current group of candidates for the NFL Hall of Fame is quarterback Randall Cunningham. He played mostly with the Philadelphia Eagles but had a great season in the late 1990s with the Minnesota Vikings.

I don't expect him to make the Hall of Fame but it is interesting to compare his regular season stats with two other Hall of Fame quarterbacks. What is keeping Cunningham from the Hall is a lack of play-off wins and he never played in a Super Bowl.

Randall Cunningham, the Ultimate Weapon

While with the Eagles, Cunningham lead the team in rushing several seasons in a row and still holds the team record for longest punt (over 90 yards). Feats such as these led Sports Illustrated to put him on its cover and call him the Ultimate Weapon.

Randall Cunningham was a very exciting player to watch, it's just too bad he never had success in the post-season.

Update:

Randall Cunningham did not make the final cut and is not on the ballot this year.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I don't see any reason to not let Cunningham into the Hall of Fame. He was a great QB and deserves the recognition. Thanks for the article.

I'd like for Randall to get into the Hall but it seems football places a lot of importance on the play-offs and the Super Bowl - especially for quarterbacks. If he had made the Super Bowl that season with the Vikings (where Atlanta beat them in the NFC finals) then he would have a much better shot at being elected to the Hall of Fame.

I also think that it is Bs for the Playoff/Superbowl Ideal for a hall of famer. He is probably a better Qb than a lot of the QB's in the hall of fame. I guess we will see where he goes.
