Freddy Adu's three-year stay with D.C. United is over, but not because of a move to a European club.
Adu, who joined United in 2004 at age 14, has been traded along with veteran goalkeeper Nick Rimando to Real Salt Lake for a major player allocation from MLS, reserve goalie Jay Nolly and future considerations.

This looks like a smart move for DC United. Freddy Adu may be leaving MLS when he turns 18 years old in the summer and Nick Rimando is a good goalkeeper but Troy Perkins had a break-out season last year.
I agree. I was surprised to see the headlines at first, but I'd take Perkins over Rimando any day (well, except that day when I drafted my fantasy team in March and took Rimando... that was dumb) and if Freddy keeps up his European aspirations, this could be the last we see of him anyway. Plus Ellinger might be smart enough to play him when he's needed.
Wait a second...
If this player is so great, then why is he being sold to another team to make way for a 'major player' then? This quote made me laugh too.
United is expected to use the player allocation to acquire a Brazilian or Argentine attacking player.
Since when were all the best strikers from Argentina or Brazil? Didier Drogba is from Ivory Coast. A country that isn't really well known for its skilled footballers. This isn't American Football, and the American game of Football (Soccer) really needs to get out of this system if they're going to actually gain world-class talent. Believe it or not, but a lot of MLS teams won't be able to afford top-class players, and definitely won't be able to accommodate their professional needs as players.
The incredible hype continues.
Adu's days in MLS are numbered. I am sure he will be off to some European club soon. Obviously DC United feel the same way. So how many games will Adu play for his new club before he leaves?
I would think he'd go this whole upcoming season before trying to ship out, but he can't leave until he turns 18 in the summer, so he'll at least get two months of games in.
Another factor to remember is the transfer windows of European clubs. They won't accept a player like him unless it suited them, so he'll probably have to wait until there's an opening at a worthwhile club or when a club hits an injury crisis before he's drafted in. Dealing with International players in certain leagues is tricky, and he'll be a lot of hard work. If no clubs are interested now in signing him then they won't be for a good while.
