Essex rock band Koopa have made chart history by becoming the first unsigned band to land a UK top 40 hit.

Under new chart rules their download-only single Blag, Steal & Borrow debuted at number 31.

Chart rules were changed at the start of the year to allow digital single sales to count towards a chart position even if there is no CD version.

Good for them. When folks like something, they'll back it. Just goes to show you that you don't need a record deal, huh?

Welcome to the new world. I see stories like this one becoming common place. I wonder if the record labels are concerned by this?

The record companies are worried. EMI just fired a bunch of executives after bad sales this past holiday season. Recording artists do not need labels anymore; they can record, promote and sell their own music online without a record company.
