A guide to enjoying Celtic brews outside Ireland.

Of the Irish, the travel journalist Paul Theroux once wrote: "I cannot remember any people so quickly hospitable or easier to meet." And, he might have added, so happy to stop for a pint and a spot of the craic, that uniquely Irish form of fun. Here, for those of you who are Irish or merely aspire to be, is a guide to that essential element in any Celtic revelry: the black stuff, a.k.a. stout.

Yum. Beer. Meal in a bottle, indeed. I can't always drink stout for that exact reason.

I'm not a stout (or Guinness) fan - when it comes to Irish brew, bring me a chilled Kilkenny on tap, in a pint mug please...and don't make the head too big. Just a nice slim layer of pure white creamy foam. Yes, I know that sounds obscene but I'm not even going to dignify that. Please people - we're talking about quality beer here...and some things are sacred.

oh - and while I'm an Aussie, I come from good Irish stock (well, rum rebellion convict stock anyway...)
