New NHL is still a lot like the old NHL

advertisement

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman can try to legislate fighting from the league, but it'll be years before the fisted culture is completely siphoned from its players.

In Bettman's sanitized version of the game, it's only the old-time fighters who are being systematically neutered, while the "pests" - players like the Rangers' Ryan Hollweg who check people from behind into the boards - so often go unjudged.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

If anything the lack of fighting is hurting it. The big fights are about the only time that everyone talks about the NHL and it is not "bad" it is basically "dude, did you see that goalie beat on that other guy?"

C. Eng, many good points in your post.

I really just want to address the idea of "quality over quantity".

That sounds great as long at the method of eliminating teams takes into account the future and not just now. The hardest thing is to determine who to eliminate and all.
