Microsoft To Announce The Xbox 360 Elite

advertisement

Rumors have floated in the past month that Microsoft will launch a new high-end version of the Xbox 360. It's true that Microsoft is preparing to announce the Xbox 360 Elite, a version of the game console with black plastic and advanced features. Several sources confirmed Microsoft plans to add this box to its product line.

The new box will go on sale in limited quantities soon for $479. The details may not be precise here, but I believe it will have an HDMI connector so that you can connect at the highest speed to a high-definition TV. It will come with a 120-gigabyte hard disk drive and will have IPTV capability.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The rumoured features sound good. I'm still not switching though. The PS3 has just been released here in New Zealand and I plan to get one soon.

Can I ask why you favour the PS3 over the X360?

Because I am loyal to the Playstation brand. I see no need to change. I like what I have read and seen of the PS3 and it does everything that I am looking for.

I'm curious as to your thoughts on the next-gen DVD format war, Spuds Stuff.

I'm graduating at the end of April, and swanking out my apartment when I get my sign-on bonus, and I'm torn between the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive (I won a 360 already), a PS3 for Blu-ray (Resistance is the only exclusive that interests me), or a standalone player for either.

Any thoughts?

standalone player for either.

From what I've been reading it'd be kind of worthless to get a standalone Blu-Ray player because the PS3 will be cheaper. I'm not sure about the HD-DVD standalones, especially since you already have the 360.

There are feature differences, though.

Naturally, the PS3 should be able to upgrade its Blu-ray firmware, but Blu-ray is getting a major new feature set this winter, to make it more interactive. With HD DVD, I don't know what features the 360 drive supports. (I do know that you need the Elite for native HDMI support, which is a pain, since 1080p-over-component isn't universally supported) Does anyone who's tried it or the PS3's Blu-ray functionality have any input?

P.S. - In the previous comment, "won" should be "own." I'm not that lucky. :-p

Early days yet. I don't have a particular preference for either but it's not good for us the consumer to have two formats out there. The sooner it gets sorted one way or the other the better. For that reason I wound't go buying any standalone player just yet.

Heh heh 360 Leet is just a souped up PC in a black box - all that is missing is a keyboard.

OK, maybe this is more like the Commodore 64 of the old - in a more user friendly format. Easy to plug in and use. Of course you don't need to know BASIC to load games from the tape.

Shouldn't that read "x80x 360 1337"?
