The YouTube video is about 8 minutes long and from the early 1980s - dig those groovy duds.

Great seed! I've always been a Doctor Who fan, so it was fun to see how they did this. I especially was fascinated by the voice-modulated instrument. I had always thought I heard chanting in the background of the theme, and now I know I'm not crazy.

This is a very interesting article and YouTube video. I have always had a interest on how and why tv show themes come about and the time it took to make them. It is amazing how some them them last the passage of time such as certain musical groups such as Pink Floyd, The Doors and other groups that are still very popular even thorough the music is 20+ years old.

I have always been a fan of Doctor Who since the early 80's and I have always wounder how it was created thanks for the post.

With the new series of Doctor Who, they redid the opening and closing music to the show, but kept the basic of the music the same as the original. The BBC did a special about the making of the new theme music as well.

I had actually seen the special that this article points to, but a long time ago. It's nice to see it again.

I found this while search YouTube for a copy of the making of the new series title music. I'm not sure if it was from the new series, but it's using digitized loops, so I think it must have been.
