An entertaining match that was interrupted by a delay for rain and lightening. After play resumed United netted their final two goals to secure the win.
The Rapids were the better team in the first half. They controlled play much of the time and had long periods of sustained pressure. In the 19th minute Colorado forward Jacob Peterson scored on a header from right around the penalty spot.
United managed some scoring opportunities of their own and on one such occasion Rapids defender Greg Vanney fouled in the area and Christian Gomez (pk 34') converted the penalty kick to level the score at 1-1.
After the break United started to take control of the game. Luciano Emilio had several good scoring chances in the 61st and 66th minutes. DC United took the lead on a corner kick taken by Fred that was headed in by Nicholas Addlery (71').
About five minutes later play was suspended for lightening. When play resumed the Rapids seemed to be flat while DC United were as lively as ever. In the final minutes of the match Fred (82') and Emilio (87') netted insurance goals for United.
