Giants Beat the Eagles Like a Drum

Osi Umenyiora sacking McNabb as Winston Justice (#74) stands by and watches.

New York Giants 16

The Giants dominated on defense with twelve sacks while the New York offense did enough to win.

Lone Justice

William Thomas, the Eagles' three time Pro Bowl Left Tackle, was deactivated for the game and the Giants took full advantage of his replacement. Winston Justice started in his first NFL game and had to face Osi Umenyiora, the Giants Pro Bowl Defensive End. It was obvious during the first Eagles offensive drive that Justice was not going to be able to handle Umenyiora. Why Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid did nothing to help Justice remains a mystery. Winston Justice was left alone all night to try and stop Umenyiora with disastrous results. Osi Umenyiora finished the game with 6 tackles, 6 sacks and 2 forced fumbles.

Under Pressure

Eagles QB Donovan McNabb was under constant pressure and his Wide Receivers caught just 6 passes the entire game. The Eagles leading receiver was RB Correll Buckhalter who had just 4 catches.

Gentle Giants

Offensively the Giants played well enough to win. Eli Manning, the Giants QB, was 14/26 with 135 yards and 1 TD and 1 INT. Giants RB Derrick Ward had 19 carries for 80 yards rushing. Neither Manning nor Ward had exceptional games but it was enough to win as the Giant defense shut down the Eagles offense.

One Giant Step

The Giants season record is now 2-2 with a chance for the play-offs a real possibility. The Eagles are 1-3 with 2 losses in the division, the play-offs are a long-shot.

Miscellaneous Notes and Selected Stats

  • Eagles Kicker David Akers missed a FG (Rocca didn't get laces turned out?) but made a 53 yd. FG for the Eagles only points of the game.
  • Deactivated for the Eagles: LT William Thomas, RB Brian Westbrook, S Brian Dawkins, TE L.J. Smith and CB Lito Sheppard.
  • Eagles RB Correll Buckhalter: 17 carries, 103 yds., 0 TDs.
  • DE Jevon Kearse had the Eagles lone sack of the game.
  • Giants TE Jeremy Shockey had 1 catch for 17 yards.
  • The Giants 12 sacks ties an NFL record.
  • Eagles Penalties: 15 for 132 yards (& 2 more were declined by the Giants).
  • Giants Penalties: 4 for 27 yards.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The Eagles now have a week off before
returning to the Meadowlands to try and win again.

I forgot to add, when the Giants weren't beating them,
the Eagles were beating themselves: 15 penalties for 132 yards.

Think how McNabb must feel. At least his knee held up well.

A very disappointing start to the season for this team. Andy Reid better rethink his strategy soon or the Eagles are in for a long season.
