The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame didn't disappoint in naming its 2008 nominees for induction last week. No, the institution continues to boldly proclaim through its actions that it is so far removed from the concept of what is specifically defined in its title. It has now become reliable in annual failure to remain relevant.
Leading off the nine nominees, five of which will be chosen for induction in a ceremony early next year, are Madonna and The Beastie Boys. Incredibly, there are people out there, and many of them are supposedly forward thinking music critics, who see this as some sort of testament to the wide net cast by rock 'n roll.
The problem is that neither of these artists is rock 'n roll. And neither of them "have demonstrable influence and significance within the history" of the genre, as the credentials for nomination require.
