Flash video not suitable for iPhone, Apple CEO says

Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs said the iPhone won't be using Adobe Systems' Inc.'s popular Flash media player any time soon, saying the technology doesn't meet his company's performance standards for video.

Speaking at a shareholder meeting in Cupertino, Calif. on Tuesday, Jobs said the version of Flash formatted to personal computers is too slow on the iPhone while the mobile version of the media player is "is not capable of being used with the web," according to reports from Dow Jones and technology website C-Net.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Is this just posturing by Jobs to get a better deal out of Adobe?

I doubt it. He's right, though. The full (desktop) version of Flash is too resource intensive to be used on portable devices. The mobile version "Flash Lite" is too crippled to be used for most websites that feature Flash. The key part of what Jobs said is that until the processing power of mobile devices increases, full Flash is out of the question.

You have to wonder if this has anything to do with the rumors floating around the apple will use some of its $16 billion in cash to buy adobe? Maybe gauge just how important Flash is to the future of mobile?
