Last week, wide receiver Terry Glenn revealed that the Cowboys were keeping him out of the team's off-season workouts.
Now we know why.
According to Glenn, the team has asked him to sign a $500,000 injury settlement -- relieving them of any further obligation if he is sidelined for the season due to his surgically repaired right knee.
If Glenn was injured without the waiver, the team would be on the hook for his entire 2008 salary of $1.74 million
. . . um, why would Terry Glenn sign this? Football is a business for him too.
The article says that his knee requires microsurgery to be fixed. Glenn has chosen to try rehab instead. He missed 15 games last season. If he plays one play this season and gets hurt the Cowboys will be on the hook for his whole salary.
They did not need him last season. They really do not need him this season.
He made his choice now the Cowboys want some insurance.
So you think Glenn should sign this for $500,000 and then if he gets injured he loses his salary of $1.74 million. Say he gets hurt the week before the season starts, then he is out the entire salary but he gets to keep the half million. If he doesn't sign this and gets hurt he keeps his salary. So how is this half million deal in Glenn's best interest?
They can cut him and not pay anything.
Yes, true. But the Cowboys can still cut him if he signs the injury settlement. So why would Glenn sign this?
I do not know the specifics of his contract but many of them have a roster clause. If they do not make the roster by a certain date, they can get out of paying him anything at all if this is in his contract. It was in Michael Vicks contract which saved the Falcons some money.
So why would Glenn sign this injury settlement? What's in it for him?
If he does not sign, he might well be cut and get NOTHING.
If he is cut then I bet another team would sign him FOR MORE THAN $500,000. And probably closer to his $1.74 million salary. So why would he sign this? Finally if this is such a great deal for Glenn then why hasn't he signed it by now??
So far no team has stepped up. He is damaged goods. Most other teams would be as wary of paying him as well. The Cowboys have a reputation for sticking with their players. Other teams know this too.
Stepped up?! He hasn't been cut, he's not a free agent.
I would think that the incentive to sign this is if he doesn't then they could just not play him. Which is bad as teams may be more reluctant to touch the guy. He'd lose a year of playing (which looks bad) also, other teams would not be so willing to go near the guy either for fear that Dallas knows something they don't and they'd probably be just as unsure as the Cowboys are about his ability to play.
To not pay Glenn he would have to be healthy and then cut by the Cowboys; I think a healthy Glenn could get more than $500,000 by signing with another team.
The operative phrase - a healthy Glenn. He is not healthy. The specialists have recommended surgery. He is opting to try another method. As long as he is in rehabilitation he is NOT totally healthy.
Yes, so why should he sign the freakin' thing - just so the team can cut him and not pay him!?
