US men's soccer team gets by Japan in first match

Fly like an Eagle, Stuart Holden celebrates his goal against Japan.

The US Men's Olympic Team did not play particularly well but managed to defeat Japan in their opening match of the Beijing games.

Japan out-played the Americans in the first half. It seemed like Japan constantly had possession of the ball in the attacking third of the field. However US goalkeeper Brad Guzan and his defenders played well to keep the game scoreless at the break.

Then just after halftime the US scored. Marvell Wynne sent in a cross, the Japanese defender tried to clear it but the ball found its way to Stuart Holden who shot and scored from about 10 yards out. The second half was just a few minutes old and the Americans led 1-0. The US offense then played better and the goal held up to be the game winner.

The US men will have to play better than this to defeat their next opponent, the Netherlands.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This wasn't the greatest soccer match ever, but worth getting up early for. I'm looking forward to the Netherlands match.
