Over the weekend the US women's team defeated Japan and the men's team was drawn by the Netherlands. Both teams have good chances of making the quarterfinals after their third and final group games this week.
Saturday the US Women's National Team played much better in their win over Japan than in their loss to Norway. US midfielder Carli Lloyd scored to only goal of the match. The American women's defense looks to be solid but they are having trouble scoring goals in the absence of Abby Wambach. The US WNT has scored just one time in their two games at the Olympics.
Presently the US WNT sits in second place in Group G and basically need a win over third place New Zealand to assure a place in the quarter finals.
Sunday the US Men's Olympic Team got off to a slow start against the Netherlands and trailed 1-0 at the break. Then in the second half Altidore and Kljestan each netted a goal to put the the US ahead 2-1. However the Dutch scored the equalizer with just minutes to play to deny the Americans their second straight win at the Beijing games.
Currently the US Men sit atop Group B and next face Nigeria, who are in second place in the group. With a win or a tie the American men's soccer team will advance to the knock-out phase.

Clipped to the Olympics group.
I'm not re-arranging my sleep schedule but I'm watching tv all day and nite whereas I usally only watch tv during prime time.
I also wrote up a drinking game that can make watching this interesting. Please swing by and add one for soccer viewing.
TiVo. :)
If I had to choose between sleep and watching it live... well, anyone watching it via nbc isn't watching it live anyway are they?
I've found them on the USA Network.
I can't watch most of the events with the rest of the world anyway, what with the other commitments in my life. I definitely see the attraction in watching the event live, but sometimes that's just not possible, particularly with such dramatic time zone differences.
Mike and others,
If you write any more Olympics stories please go over to either my drinking game article or the serious (protest stuff) or light (tv coverage) and post a link to whatever you wrote and we'll make that an unofficail index of sorts.
If there's interest I can write up a real index this weekend but since I'm usuaally already accused of posting too many links - and am trying to do that less - I hesitate to be the one doing that.
Well, born and raised in The Netherlands and living in the USA I was looking forward to the match between my home countries. I must admit, I thought we would win easily but in the end we were very lucky. Now the Dutch are through to the quarter finals and America lost to Nigeria, I wish both had gone trough. And that is not a social desirable answer.....smile.
But anyway, we will face Argentina now and I am pretty sure that after that match the players of the Netherlands can go on vacation!!
