The NBA is poised to become the first major U.S. sports league to stream live games in local markets, an aggressive offering that will set up a showdown between cable operators and regional sports networks.
The move marks the latest evolution in digital rights and adds fuel to one of the most contentious issues in local sports media as teams look to broaden their reach while operators look to protect the rights to their most expensive programming.
Good for the NBA!
That's really cool. Too bad I still won't be able to watch Cavs games in New York. =(
Luckily YES and MSG televise all Knicks/Nets games and the Cavs have a lot of nationally televised games this season. That's something at least.
Untrue, MLB.tv has been doing this for ages. Unfortunately, MLB.tv is non-free :-(.
Anyway, I can't wait for this. Maybe I'll actually start following the Nets.
(what I really want is for NBC to follow through on their promise and start streaming NFL games)
I think the keyword here is 'local', doesn't MLB.tv black-out local games?
