Once the leader in rentals and the place where practically everyone found time to stop after work and pick up a few movies, Blockbuster is now a shadow of its former self. Competitors, suspect management, and evolving industry dynamics have rocked the company, leaving it in a precarious position. And unless it moves quickly to improve its business model and shore up its position in the market, it may become an irrelevant company with little chance of survival.
Can Blockbuster be saved?
Probably not. Blockbuster seems to just reacting slowly to Netflix. When was the last time you were in a Blockbuster store? For me it was probably last millennium.
I was one of the first Netflix subscribers, and was with them up until recently. Once I got a Wii, I switched to Blockbuster. Not only do I get my movies through the mail, but I also get 1 in-store game rental per month. It's been great to be able to rent Wii games and try them out before deciding to buy. Also, if you want a different movie *right now*, you can bring in your return mailer to the store and leave right then with a new rental, rather than wait for a new one to be shipped. When returning in-store, it immediately gets marked as returned, and the next movie in your queue gets sent in addition to the in-store rental you just took home.
