New MacBooks Have HDCP, Gives iTunes Purchases Less Freedom

advertisement

High Definition Content Protection—the annoying DRM-y thing that's supposed to stop people from copying hi-def stuff as it travels over a card-display connector— has apparently, and unfortunately, come to Apple's MacBooks.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Well, I guess the free market and Steve Jobs has decided you need less freedom.

This isn't a "Macbook" issue, it's a video card issue. Any laptop (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Apple, etc.) with the majority of newer video cards, coupled with a digital connection (HDMI, Display Port, DVI) will have the same issue. It should also be noted that it's only *some* content that's encoded with the DRM, and that's solely up to the discretion of the studios to either put it in or not. Of course, it's always better to sensationalize the issue and blame Apple/Steve Jobs...that tactic has been proven to garner far more page hits than actually covering the issue truthfully and objectively.

Until the studios realize that DRM doesn't work, and only causes law abiding citizens to get highly frustrated, we're going to have to deal with this crap. Let the studios know how you feel...they're the only ones that can change it.

That wasn't aimed at you...but more at the tech bloggers (like Gizmodo.)
