Apple's iPod Problem

Read ArticleArticle Source: Business Week

With fewer iPod users upgrading, the days of explosive growth are over. And that leaves iPhones and Macs picking up the slack.

Chris Wysopal is the head of a four-iPod family. His wife and two kids all carry the pint-size nano music player from Apple (AAPL), while he uses a 2003-vintage device he got as a hand-me-down from his wife. But as much they love their iPods, the Wysopal family has no plans to buy any new ones in the foreseeable future. "They're all working, so there's no need to buy more," says Chris.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I don't own an iPod, if Apple wants me to buy one then they better add ogg and flac support. But I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Really? Do you *actually use* ogg and flac? If so, why both? Why not pick one or the other? I hear the cries for ogg and flac support, from a small but vocal minority, but I have yet to meet someone who actually uses either one. I know they exist...just haven't met one.

Yes, really. Flac files tend to be bigger than ogg, so limit flac use to classical music. I rip my classical music CDs to flac and the Philadelphia Orchestra sells flac music too. I have also downloaded classical music in flac from Archive.org. Ogg I use for other types of music like rock. I downloaded a plug-in for WinAmp so I can rip CDs into ogg.
