Apple's secret sauce: A simple product line

Read ArticleArticle Source: CrunchGear

Apple is doing something right because every other company, including Microsoft and Sony, is laying folks off but Apple is paving the halls with gold. Didja hear? Apple made $10 billion last year and their simple product line is the key. Look at it. There really aren't that many products: One cellphone, four iPods, three notebooks, and three desktop computers. Now look at HP's, Dell's, or even Garmin and TomTom's product lines. Apple does something different and hopefully others are taking notes.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

"Keep it simple" is often a good rule to follow.

Successful companies in other industries have followed the same rule.

Look at In-n-Out Burger for example. Very simple menu (hamburger/cheesburger, fries, drinks (soda, iced tea, lemonade,) and shakes. That's it. (Of course, there's the not-so-secret menu offering variations like no bun, pickles, etc.) It's not much of a surprise that In-n-Out is the highest grossing (per store) fast food restaurant. Simple menu, fresh food (no freezers, no microwaves, no heat lamps, fries cut fresh from whole potatoes throughout the day, meat that's never been frozen, buns baked fresh daily, hand leafed lettuce, etc.)

Rats. Now I'm hungry and we don't have an In-n-Out in my neck of the woods!
