Buyers are finding that the device has trouble making it through a workday without a rest stop at the electrical outlet.
And Apple Issues Heat Advisory for iPhone 3G, 3GS, but most people seem to still love their iPhones.
They overheat and the batteries don't last ... I guess the best thing is to leave them turned off!
Why would your above link concern anyone, or prevent anyone from loving their iPhone? Anyone who owns any smartphone would be recommended to not use it as the temperatures covered by the heat advisory. Its not really an Apple specific warning. It's a common sense warning, rooted in the limitations of electronic devices in general.
As for the battery life issue, the above article specifically states that the battery for the 3GS is better than the previous 3G battery, and *way* better than the Pre battery. This is nothing more than the LA Times needing something to write about Apple, so they latch onto this, but their own writing undermines their claims.
The problems are software problems. People have found that rebooting the phone solves the problem for a day or so. Apple will fix the software issue and the problem of overheating and battery life will vanish.
Battery life is a huge problem with the Google G-1 too. Powering on all those radios (GSM, Bluetooth, WiFi,GPS) chews up power. Plus a lot of the newer apps are more graphics intensive. That can chew through battery life extremely quickly.
The iPhone is an awesome device and application platform. They are not immune to problems that face any battery powered device.
Yeah, I have a G1 and it is just good enough to make it through the day with moderate use.
I was out of town once and using it as my guide / gps / phone and I would have to recharge by about 2 PM.
We need a breakthrough battery technology!
It's like anything with a battery. Think about using a laptop. I could plug away in a word processor with WiFI off for hours. But, once I fire up WiFi and watch some streaming video, my battery life is a fraction.
the only problem i have with the iphone is at&t. i still will not get one just for that reason.
i have a palm phone it's got battery problems too. they all do, if your just going to use your phone has a phone, battery life is ok...but if your going to surf or watch tv or do anything else...bring along a power cord. it's the same thing with laptops...i always have a power cord available, it's just common sense.
I've been a proud iPhone user for about 8 months now (just the 3g, don't have the 3g s). There's a couple little tricks you learn when you get the phone that boost battery life, but most important is turn off WiFi and 3G unless you need them. They suck (pun intended) for battery life.
I use mine sync'ed to an Exchange server every day. If I'm in and out of buildings and the phone is switching between 3g and EDGE, I get about 6 hrs of any reasonable battery life. If I disable 3G I'll have 40% charge when I go to bed at night.
For most emailing / SMSing / phone calling, you don't need anything more anyway.
But yeah - with as much as these devices do, and how slim they are, it's not surprising they get crappy battery life.
I also wonder how expected life will go up after the honeymoon on all the new features wears off?
I also wonder how expected life will go up after the honeymoon on all the new features wears off?
This is key, and there's a reason why "battery life sucks" styled complaints always come up after a new version of the iPhone is released, and that's because a bunch of new users get an iPhone, they get a bunch of apps, and they use it for 4-6 hours straight, every day, for the first couple weeks, and that's simply not typical use.
Then, their usage normalizes, and the battery becomes a pretty standard battery and, if you look at the stats, one of the best batteries on the market for phones in its class.
I have played a few graphics intensive games that take a heavy toll. You can practically see the battery meter moving to empty.
I guess I'm one of those old fashioned types that simply wants a phone so I can make phone calls. I charge my RAZR about once a week whether it needs it or not.
HA HA HA, you old person!
Just kidding. Seriously, if that is what works for you then good for you. I recently went on a trip though and it was such a great help to have a smart phone. Instant access to traffic, weather, navigation, and anything else I needed to know via the internet.
If you honestly only charge your RAZR once a week, you're incredibly lucky. Those things are pretty renowned for their @!$%#ty battery life, and the one I owned before I got my iPhone was no exception to that renown.
It's too bad you iPhone users can't buy an extended battery that doesn't look absolutely stupid. It's ok though, I'll let you borrow my BlackBerry to make a phone call when your phone is dead. :-)
It's too bad you iPhone users can't buy an extended battery that doesn't look absolutely stupid.
Hey, at least I have to actually attach something to my phone to make it look stupid. :-)
The Mophie juicepack air looks like any other phone case. The other Mophie juicepack and the FastMac do not exactly look seamless, but they provide a lot more battery life.
The only decent looking external battery I have seen for the BlackBerry is the Case-Mate for the BlackBerry Bold. Otherwise, the only option is one of the USB attached brick style battery packs.
that case is freaking awesome!
The new one is. The older Mophie looked a little dorky, but still better than the FastMac. But, the FastMac has a built-in LED that can help the camera in low-light and, of the three cases, it has the highest capacity battery.
The iPhone is pretty amazing for what it does. So its not surprising that the battery life could be killed real quick depending on the Wi-fi and heavy apps you may use. But generally Apple is notorious for having the inadequate batteries for their electronics.
Again, people are saying things that simply aren't backed up by history.
The iPod has always been competitive, if not downright impressive, when it comes to battery life.
MacBook (Pro and otherwise) laptops have always been incredibly competitive, and are currently unmatched...
I sure wish people would back up their views when they make offhand claims...
Calm down fan boy, we aren't talking about iPods or MacBooks. We are talking about the iPhone 3GS.
Batter life in smart phones in general (my G1 is no exception) sucks when compared to something like a RAZR. This is not unexpected, however being expected doesn't make it suck any less.
@!$%# off, @!$%# -- and learn how to read before posting any further comments:
But generally Apple is notorious for having the inadequate batteries for their electronics.
Emphasis most emphatically mine. Now, what was it that we weren't talking about, again? Because, I could @!$%#ing swear that he claimed that "their electronics" have notoriously had inadequate batteries, and that would seem to indicate devices beyond the iPhone.
In general, when you're going to be a douche to someone, it helps to be right.
