Walt is free from cooking meth but doesn't seem happy about it. Ted writes a check for the IRS then checks out himself. Hank is onto the laundry where Gus' super meth lab is located.
Episode 4.11 - 'Crawl Space'
Jesse drives a wounded Mike and a poisoned Gus to a medical team in the desert. They tend to Gus but largely ignore Mike. Jesse sees to it that Mike gets some medical attention too. Gus recovers enough that he and Jesse can move on but Mike will remain, he needs about a week of rest to recover.
Gus says to Jesse that he really proved himself in Mexico, that surely he can cook meth by himself now. Jesse responds by telling Gus to let Walt go free. If Walt is killed then Jesse won't cook for Gus.
Hank finally gets Walt to drive him out to the chicken farm. There's nothing there of course, Walt tipped Gus off so he had time to clean things up. However on another day while driving out to the farm, Hank decides that he wants to check out the laundry! (You know where Gus has the meth lab.) Walt not knowing what to do drives past the laundry and then intentionally crashes into an on-coming car. (Oh no, not the Pontiac Aztek!)
Skyler has had enough of trying to convince Ted to pay what he owes the IRS. There just is no reasoning with him so she has Saul send over a few goons to force him to write a check for the IRS. Ted does as he is told. Then he tries to run out of his place but slips on a rug, his head slams into a wall. It seems Ted is dead.
Walt goes to Jesse's place and pleads for his help. Jesse turns him away then several of Gus' henchmen show up. They taser Walt, put a black bag over his head and take him out into the desert. Gus shows up and tells Walt, "You are done. Fired. Stay away from Pinkman."
Walt correctly surmises that Gus can't kill him because of Jesse. Gus responds that he will now take care of Hank since Walt can't seem to do it as he promised. Furthermore Gus says if Walt tries to interfere then he will kill Walt's family, infant daughter included.
This freaks Walt out, he frantically goes to Saul and asks for the guy who can make people disappear. Saul gives Walt the information but says the guy needs all of the cash, approximately half a million dollars, up front or he won't even lift a finger. Walt goes to the crawl space at home looking for the cash but there's not enough, a lot of it is missing. Skyler walks in and tells him that she took the money to pay Ted. Walt becomes hysterical, he fluctuates between crying and laughing as he lies on his back in the crawl space.
Commentary and Analysis
This episode dealt with the aftermath of last week's poisoning of Don Eladio and his inner circle. I expect the final two episodes of the season to follow in a similar pattern. Next week there will be dramatic events and then the last episode of the season will deal with the consequences to a certain extent. What will happen?
There has to be some sort of reckoning between Gus and Walt. Gus is somewhat vulnerable now that Mike, his main henchman, is out of commission for a while. Walt's back is against the wall. He can't disappear and if someone else learns to make his recipe for blue meth then Gus won't need Jesse or him. It's just a matter of time.
So somehow I don't see Gus surviving the last two episodes of the season. Just how Walt manages to pull himself together and do it remains to be seen.
- What will Walt do now that he's been 'fired' by Gus?
- Will Gus kill Hank?
- Will Walt fix the Aztek?
