An L.A. Times study of Oscar voters finds that their demographics are much less diverse than the moviegoing public. Academy leaders say they want to diversify.

The industry is overwhelming white and male. According to this story, the academy's demographics actually reflect the industry fairly accurately.
Denzel Washington:
"If the country is 12% black, make the academy 12% black," Washington said. "If the nation is 15% Hispanic, make the academy 15% Hispanic. Why not?"
Because that's racist! We're going to plug people into positions of responsibility and the primary criterion is race?
If you're going to adjust for anything, I'd make some attempt to adjust for age.
Oscar voters have a median age of 62, the study showed. People younger than 50 constitute just 14% of the membership.
The article doesn't say, but I suspect this does not mirror the industry.
Age is one thing about a person that actually changes. You'll always be black or female, but you won't always be 30. More talented young people need to be voting because young people get excited about different things. And they'll be old soon enough.
They also need to filter out the old people who aren't actually active in the industry anymore.
